About

11C04644-6B7C-41B5-84CC-29AD8748B727Welcome to my homepage, all you writers and fans of writing and anyone who wandered in by mistake! I’m a restless writer, always following inspiration wherever and however I find it, which is probably how I came to write for all ages in all forms, from novels to poems to picture books to memoir.

My picture book Someday was a #1 New York Times bestseller and my Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel Shadow Baby was a Today Show Book Club pick. My work has been translated into more than 20 languages and has won many fellowships and awards. I’ve taught creative writing at Metropolitan State University, Vermont College, Hamline University’s MFA program, and on my own.

My most recent books are The Opposite of Fate, about the way in which a young woman reconfigures her life in the aftermath of an assault, and Never Coming Back, about a mother and daughter trying their best to resolve their complicated relationship before it’s too late.
