Day Nine: Ugh

One of my worst fears is losing use of my fingers. How would I type? How could I write? Horrifies me so much I have nightmares about it.

Voice recognition software is supposeod to be good, but I can only write when my fingers are flying on the keyboard. No planning things out ahead of time.

You would have to teach yourself how to type with your toes, is what I’ve always told myself. You would still be able to write, I’ve assured myself.

Some painters paint with a brush in their mouths. Touchstone screens would help, right?

But the idea of it –so slow, so laborious- has always scared the crap out of me.

And that is why today’s new thing was to type an entire post with my two big toes only, including inserting a photo. Here you go, people.

You have no idea how long this took me.

Where was the computer when you did this?

I am nine days late to wish you happy birthday, but it has felt like my own birthday having all nine posts (and the poem) to read at once!

Lucy! Thanks so much for the birthday wishes and sweet comment. I’ve been returning to your blog to stare at those photos of the French ABC book you posted – love them.

P.S. Lucy, I big-toe-typed that post on my iPad. I propped it up at a slant on two pillows, put my arms behind my back, and did the best I could. Touchscreen did make it easier, but my big toes are pretty big, and wow, it was slow going.

    That. Is. So Wrong.

Making me laugh so hard, that is.

Day ten found us trying out a new neighborhood pupuseria. They had pupusas of a type called loroco, which neither I nor my Central American husband had heard of. The waitress said it was a flower of a vine, somewhat like squash flowers, which I quite enjoy. Said it was the best pupusa, a staple in her home country of El Salvador. As I had not yet done anything remotely new today, I ordered one and dug in with expectant gusto.

Man, that was some nasty shit. When we returned home I googled loroco and it does indeed look like it could be healthy and tasty, but what I had today was tiny green flecks floating in a sea of grease and a very weird chewy cheese that made me gag.

Oh well. If every day you try something new, sometimes you get a delicious pomegranate mojito and sometimes you get an inedible loroco pupusa.

I am laughing out loud, and hope that this exercise will help your nightmares go away. (See, you can still write!) You must have very long and agile toes!

And I was proud of myself for taking a Classical Mythology final left-handed. (Also slow and frustrating, but I bet nothing like this.)
